PRESENTATION: WUI Fire Evacuation and Sheltering Considerations: Assessment, Planning, and Execution
The presentation will focus on wildland urban interface (WUI) evacuation challenges and findings, with insights relevant to all WUI communities. The presenter will share why and how National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) ESCAPE wildfire evacuation methodology was developed, the technical foundation behind it, why it was re-released, and the key improvements, including a new online educational tool. Special attention will be given to small and intermediate-size intermix communities, for whom ESCAPE was specifically designed.
It is recommended (but not required) that attendees take the free ESCAPE course on the program website prior to the November 21 meeting.
