PRESENTATION:  Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Fire Marshals

Advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are paving the way for innovation in tools and technologies within the public safety realm. This presentation will provide an overview of AI models for fire marshals. The session will be split into two modules with a break between modules. The first module will provide a background on how AI models function to provide attendees an understanding of the building blocks of the complex tools on the market. The second module will walk through example applications that may be of interest to fire marshals as well as key questions to be asking on verification and validation of the tools. Each module will be followed by time for question and answers from attendees.

Speaker: Jonathan Hodges, PHD (Jensen Hughes)

Dr. Hodges is the Director of Modeling at Jensen Hughes with a focus in the Research and Development Division. His team works in the intersection of fire risk assessment, computational modeling, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Hodges is an international expert in model verification and validation. He is a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) task group updating the engineering guidance on Fire Model Substantiation, with his primary involvement in the model verification and validation chapter. He has published two handbook chapters on “Intelligent Firefighting” and “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Firefighting”. He has also presented at two of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)’s workshops on Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Hodges currently serves on the board of governors for the SFPE Foundation where he is a member of the technical committee and participates in the Grand Challenge Initiative on Digitalization, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity.
