PRESENTATION: Encapsulation Fire Suppression Technology
Encapsulation technology has been included in NFPA 18A, Standard on Water Additives for Fire Control and Vapor Mitigation, since 2022. Encapsulation is a relatively new addition to fire protection science. It is a non-corrosive, biodegradable, PFAS-free water additive that is not a wetting agent or a foam. It attacks fire by neutralizing fuels and increasing the cooling effects of water. Fire byproducts and toxins are reduced. This class will explain the molecular action of these agents. The creation of micelles critical to encapsulation will be described. How and why this provides a new form of fire extinguishment will be explored. Attendees will learn how encapsulation addresses all classes and types of fire, including lithium ion batteries, while helping protect firefighters from cancer causing exposures. These agents have been researched, tested and used throughout the world.
Speaker: Bruce Kral and Jeffrey Bonkoski
Bruce Kral is a retired firefighter that spent more than 36 years in the fire service in Colorado. The last eight years he served as the fire marshal for six municipalities and parts of two counties. He is currently ICC certified as a fire plans examiner and fire marshal. Bruce was the president of the Fire Marshals Association of Colorado from 2015 through 2019. He also served on the board of the Rocky Mountain chapter of SFPE from 2015 through 2019. He resides in Michigan and is an encapsulator technology specialist for Hazard Control Technologies.
Jeffrey Bonkoski is the Western Area Market Manager for Hazard Control Technologies, specializing in the application of Encapsulator Agents fire suppression, spill control, and HazMat applications for municipal fire departments and industries. He is a retired Fire Captain/Paramedic with over 40 years of service, he was a Hazmat Specialist leading a 17-Community Mutual Aid HazMat Team and a co-leader of a State of Michigan Regional Response HazMat Team.
