PRESENTATION:  Part 1: NFPA 241 - Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations; and Part 2: Legislative Discussion

  • Construction Fire Protection & NFPA 241Major fires on building construction sites continue to increase in size and financial loss across the U.S. each year. There have also been recent tragedies that included loss of life, including several firefighter line-of-duty deaths (LODDs) in construction-related fires. Fire codes and standards have included requirements for fire prevention on construction sites for many decades, however, sometimes there are challenges associated with fully implementing these requirements. This session will provide an overview of NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, including how NFPA 241 is referenced in the International Fire Code (IFC), and indirectly in the International Building Code (IBC). The session will also include some case studies of construction site fires, and examples of how some fire departments have taken additional steps to implement the requirements in NFPA 241 on construction sites.

  • Legislative Initiatives Discussion:  Bob Sullivan and Greg Rogers will lead an open discussion of some legislative initiatives that FMAC is monitoring, e.g., single-family fire sprinkler requirements adoption, single-stair apartment buildings, valet trash, etc.

Speakers: Bob Sullivan (NFPA) and Greg Rogers (ICC Fire Service Membership Council)
